August in Montreal?
So, to keep my mind off Clarion (and because it's one of the things I promised The Ritual Artist I'd do) I'm trying to lay out our vacation in Montreal, second week in August.

Does anyone have any advice about Montreal?  We're driving up with two kids (girl 15, boy 9); should be able to get there in a day.  Planning to stay about a week. Anything at all about attractions, must-sees, pitfalls, accommodations, etc. would be welcome.

I've been directed here by girlspell because I'm a Montrealer. So, I'm here to do my duty ;) I'm from the West Island myself but it's just a measly 30 minute drive (providing there's no traffic of course!).

As far as attractions go, it's pretty much a free-for-all here. There's always the Old Port area with the Pointe-à-Callières museum, or the Science and Technology museum, or the IMAX if that's your fancy. You can also take boat rides on the St-Lawrence river (our favourite is the Bateau Mouche).

Not far from there on Île Ste-Hélène there's La Ronde, an attraction park. Lots of rides, and on some nights there's a fireworks competition right on-site.

In the Downtown area (right next to the Old Port) there's countless art museums, shopping centers, the like. There's the Jazz Festival pretty much all summer, and I believer the Just For Laughs festival is also all summer long but I'm not exactly sure.

Apart from fun attractions, there's restaurants (of every type and every caliber) all over the place not to mention night clubs (but I'm guessing you're not looking for that ;) The Insectarium, Biodôme, Olympic Stadium and Jardin Botanique are important attractions as well.

Here's a good guide I just found. Have fun!

Thanks, A! I appreciate the help. And thanks to Rachel for sending you to me.

The kids will definitely want to go to La Ronde and the Biodôme. The son, but not the daughter, will go for the Insectarium.

Oh, jealous. The husbie and I have been trying to get up north forever now, but it never seems to happen for whatever reason. (for example, this year it's SD for vaca!) I hope you have a great time, and I expect a full report so that the mister and I can plan our next trip :)

Hi, Tiff. I'll take notes for you.

(Already have notes on Prince Edward Island, by the way, if that's your taste. Also Stratford and Toronto.)

The transit system is really good, and if you snag a hotel near the Palais de Congres, you'll be able to get anywhere. (We liked L'Hotel XIX Siecle, but don't know if that's as good for families).

Most places speak English, until you get to the inside of Mount Royal, where we ran into French only stuff. (I speak enough to get by).

Lots of tourist stuff, although we went after the waterfront was closed (early November)and couldn't do those attractions. Lots of museums, easy walking distance.

I think you're channeling Jonathan Frakes in that profile picture.

Yes! And he was wondering why you didn't invite him along when you went on the "Let's Make Psychotic Avatars" photo shoot!

LMAO these are great.

Thanks! Did you explain to A about the toxicity issue?

What toxicity issue?

Never mind...

Guess you're not as toxic as you thought, Ken.

To your original post, I have only seen Montreal in the worst week-long blizzard of my life, in December '08 when New England froze and lost power, so we didn't do too much sightseeing... But hope you have a blast.

Thanks again!

Hope you have another trip there, under better conditions...
